New Food

Iris BudSo, my mother has read this book – The China Study, and it convinced her to switch to a vegan diet. I, of course, am going to switch to a vegan diet too because I live with her and… well… it sounds kinda like something worth doing. I do want to read the book, but from what my mother has told me there are serious negative health effects of eating animal products. And there are powerful interests keeping the relevant nutritional studies out of the public maelstrom of information. Nutrition and intrigue – what more could you want? Anyway, the last few days have been spent finding new recipes and especially yesterday, preparing the pantry for a switch to a vegan diet. My mother has found a new appreciation for a book I bought back when I graduated from college – Recipes from an Ecological Kitchen: Healthy Meals for You and the Planet. This book uses a pressure cooker in a lot of the recipes and – it’s vegan! So yesterday we went to buy a pressure cooker and the one we wanted wasn’t available in our area, so we drove to Birmingham to shop there. First we went to Makarios for a quick late lunch. I had a cup of lentil soup, a hummus and tabbouleh sandwich, and french fries. This was great food. I was eating this food and realized that I was enjoying it at least as much as the last time I had lobster. Now that was a revelation.

Anyway, after we ate we went to look at vegan cookbooks at a big bookstore. We got a couple of books. One book we got – Everyday Raw Desserts, I am particularly looking forward to trying out. I find the raw food movement funny. I don’t know why. I’m not dedicated to raw, but I’ll try the deserts. They have some chocolate deserts too! But, I have to loose a little weight before we go all crazy with the deserts. I know I can gain weight on a vegan diet – I can gain weight on any diet. The point is to become more healthy, so I am trying to not eat too much even though there is so much good vegan food out there.

After we bought our cookbooks, we went to buy the pressure cooker. And then, we went to the Whole Foods Market to buy some groceries – things we can’t get here at home. We have a full week of cooking ahead of us. Anyway, we had gotten most all out food and we found ourselves looking at the flowers at Whole Foods. My mother asked if we should get some irises – would that be fun? And I thought of all the fun I could have taking pictures of these flowers, so I said it would be fun. So, we got some and I had fun with them. And, that’s the picture at the top of this post.

Tonight we cooked a butternut squash and yellow dal soup. It was fabulous. We got the recipe from Aarti Party on the Food Network. I like Indian food, and this was just great food. I started thinking about a class in Atlanta I have next week and how I could arrange to eat this soup and some of the other things we’ve been eating while away for this class. I thought about the food I usually have while taking these classes, and it didn’t appeal to me the way this soup did. I think I will take some food with me. It will be difficult to eat and stay on this diet while away from home, but I will try.

For some reason, the idea of eating a “plant based diet” really appeals to me. I don’t know why. I’ve always had leanings in that direction. Just being a vegetarian wouldn’t cut it, and quite frankly the religious or political reasons for being vegan don’t really speak to me. I’ve always sort of scoffed at people who try to explain why they are vegetarian or what have you. But at this particular point in time I am looking forward to eating – and I haven’t really felt that way for a while. There are some things I will miss for sure, but I have to focus on eating very good food and how healthy I will be.

Snow Days

Back Yard in Snow and IceWell, Sunday night it snowed. Monday was a snow day! Tuesday it was mostly clear – but I didn’t go out anyway, and we didn’t go to an evening meeting for fear that what had melted during the day would re-ice in the cold of night. This is what it looks like in our back yard today. Believe you me, the ‘snice’ – I just came up with that – is very hard. I stood on it, putting all my weight on one foot, and barely made an impression – and I’m no lightweight either. (Although I am 3 1/2 lbs. lighter than the beginning of the year, according to the Curves scale – yay!)

Just after I took these pictures of the back yard, I saw a bird in the front yard slipping and sliding on the snice. Yep, down here in the south even the birds don’t know what to do with snow/ice. It was kinda funny to see this bird slipping and sliding. I tried to get a picture, and I almost did… It really needed a video camera, and I didn’t have one when I saw the bird really having trouble. This is the best I can do with my still camera. First we have the bird, then we have the bird behind some trees flapping his wings for balance as he slides across the snice. Yeah, I know, it takes a little imagination. It’s the best I can do.

Back Yard in Snow and IceSo what did I do on my snow days? Well, I completely and totally broke my website for one thing. That was fun. I did something really stupid (that a lot of people have done) and I managed to calm down enough to find the solution in the wordpress.org support forums. I fixed the problem and then, my site was displaying an http 500 Internal Server Error or some such thing. So, I called Go Daddy support. I have to say that I’ve called Go Daddy three times now and every time I’ve had great customer support. The first call was sales, and obviously that went well, the site is here. The second and third times it was technical support and both times I got great help. Kudos to Go Daddy! Anyway it is super easy to completely and totally wreck your site with WordPress.org – I mean the code is just right there!

Bird standing on snow/iceThe other thing I did to my site (and this had nothing to do with breaking the site) was add these cool facebook ‘Like’ buttons, and other facebook functionality. I think these ‘Like’ buttons are the wave of the future. And, I kinda like having them there. I don’t know if they will stay or not, but for now they are peacefully waiting for someone to ‘Like’ them. They appear on my blog posts and on the individual pictures on the gallery page. By that I mean you have to go to the gallery page, click on a picture, scroll down, and there’s the button. I was really just wanting to have a way to update facebook when I update the blog, and somehow I ended up with ‘Like’ buttons. They work great. Let’s hope that the publish functionality works as well.

Bird slipping and sliding on snow/iceAnother favorite snow day activity of course is to play Kirby’s Epic Yarn. This is a game I bought for my mother for Christmas. In the week between Christmas and New Year’s I spent about 30+ hours on this game – with my mother watching. Turns out she really enjoys watching me play this game. And I enjoy playing it. So it works out fabulously! Well, I’m not the best video game player, so although I technically finished it, there is still more to be done to get to that 100% complete level. Snow days are perfect for playing video games a little bit.

And, I don’t know what all else I did. Oh! I lined a few beads with silver tubing. I am going to be doing a demo in Marietta for the Southern Flames some time this month. So I want to be in good practice for that. I have a whole bunch of European charm bracelet beads that I’ve made. I don’t want to line them all ahead of the demo because I need to have some silver left to do the demo. I probably have enough silver tubing to line a few beads and still have some for the demo, but I want to be extra triple sure.

Speaking of glass happenings, I should mention that a picture I took of one of my beads was published in the Winter issue of The Flow Magazine. It was part of the expanded gallery of the Women in Glass issue. I was super pleased about this. It’s a thrill to see my bead and my name in print in a real magazine. There are A LOT of pretty beads in the gallery section – and other glass works as well, but mostly beads. I feel honored to be included in their company. So, go pick up a copy or order one online – either the print or electronic version! That is all. For now.

Dolphin Adventure

Me and the dolphinThis is continued or excerpted from my post about the cruise. This post is all about the dolphin adventure shore excursion that I went on. It is rather detailed and may be a little boring, but a year from now I’ll be really glad that I wrote it. So here it is.

In the orientation meeting the dolphin trainer introduced himself (I forgot his name too) and told us that there were several “behaviors” that we would do with the dolphin. This consisted of hand/arm signals we would perform and the resulting dolphin behavior. The first behavior was to put one hand palm up in the other hand palm up on the surface of the water and the dolphin put her head (or nose really) in my hands. Then, I was supposed to (and I did) lift up the dolphin and put my cheek to the dolphin’s nose, then kiss the dolphin on the nose. Then you put your arms straight out, grab the pectoral fins and “do a little dance” with the dolphin. This routine wasn’t my favorite, but it was pretty cool, and I guess it’s a way to introduce yourself. And, it produced nice photographs.

My favorite behavior was performed treading water – well the life vest kept you pretty well afloat – but it was away from the platform. I put my arms straight out on the surface of the water and the dolphin came and lay across my arms. I really got a sense of how big the dolphin was, and how powerfully built she was. I also got to really feel the dolphin against my arms – she was more rubbery than anything else.

Me and a dolphinAnd the last couple of behaviors were performed even further from the platform. One, I held my right arm out over the water with my left arm crossed over my chest with my hand on my right shoulder. The dolphin swam up under my right arm on her back and I grabbed first her left pectoral fin with my right hand and then her right pectoral fin with my left hand and she swam to the platform on her back, belly to belly with me. That was really neat – dolphins can move fast! The other behavior was with a kickboard. The idea was that the dolphin would pick a foot, and push you back to the platform while you rode on the kickboard. I think I kept bending my knees because I felt the dolphin push then stop, then start and stop again several times. So, that behavior didn’t work too well for me, but it was still cool. Again, I got a sense for how powerful the dolphin is.

And that was my dolphin adventure. I’m not too sure about the treatment/ utilization of the dolphins, but the dolphin we were assigned seemed to be with the program. I mean, if the dolphin didn’t want to do what she was doing, she wouldn’t do it. When we did the dog-sled shore excursion in Alaska, the trainer there said the dogs liked to work. Perhaps the dolphins like to be busy too. Maybe they are people dolphins. I don’t know. In any event I’m unlikely to do it again, but glad I finally got a chance to be in the water with a dolphin.

Winter Cruise

Cocktail KaleidoVid

I took this KaleidoVid of my drink during the embarkation party.

I went on a cruise from 12/12 to 12/19 with my friend Beth. Or rather, I went on half a cruise. We missed two out of the four ports of call you see. Although we didn’t have a hurricane, we did have some bad weather, and that’s what caused us to miss the ports. The first night on the boat was probably the most interesting dinning experience I have ever had. The boat was really rocking and rolling. My butter knife flew off the table and Beth’s drink tried to as well. We sat there holding our place settings in place while all around was the sound of crashing. While I couldn’t see the source of the crashing / breaking dinnerware, I did see the Christmas trees swinging precariously. I thought for sure they would topple, but they didn’t.  We did finally get our meal, but it was somewhat delayed by the severe instability of the boat. Walking was difficult, and I imagine walking with trays full of food was even more precarious.

This was the worst weather that many of the waitstaff had seen. They were scared. I was not scared, and neither was Beth. I wondered if maybe we were just too dumb to be scared. In the end, nothing really bad happened to either of us – which would suggest we didn’t have anything to be scared of. We didn’t even get sea-sick. I did, however, feel as if I was going to fall out of bed a few times that night. And, the next morning the duty-free shop (where all the liquor was) was closed with the door papered over. I peeked in and sure enough, the shelves were empty and the floor was covered with bottles – not all of them broken.

Montego Bay

This is as close as we got to Jamaica

So, we had high seas and didn’t even try to go to Key West. The next port was supposed to be Jamaica. Well, we pulled up to it early in the morning. I tried taking a few photos, but there wasn’t much light. I did get one – which I’m glad of because that is as close as we got. We had breakfast and met in the show room (which had windows, but they were all covered over with drapes) to wait for our excursion to leave. Well, instead there was an announcement from the Captain that the waves were too high for the tenders, so we had no choice but to spend the day at sea. I called it a diversionary tactic – to get everybody in a room with no windows and then leave. Beth grumbled that we could have been docked if there had been better planning – the port of call was changed from Falmouth to Montego Bay rather late and we had to use tenders because there were no more dock berths.

Me and a dolphinSo by the time we got to Georgetown, Cayman Islands, we were more than ready to get off the boat. Beth went shopping. I went on a Dolphin Adventure shore excursion which included entrance into the turtle farm. I didn’t really have enough time at the turtle farm, so I didn’t get a lot of good pictures there. The dolphin swim was really neat – both in that I got to actually touch a dolphin and in seeing what an operation they have going on.

The way it works is once you have gotten changed and put everything in a locker you get separated into groups based on the wrist band you are wearing. Then you have an orientation meeting where they tell you what to expect. Then you march off to your assigned dolphin area, get in the water, and have your adventure. This place can serve a lot of tourists on a ship day, and the dolphins really earn their keep. Our dolphin (whose name I forgot unfortunately) kept pretty busy doing one trick after another and stayed on task pretty much the whole time.

I wasn’t going to go into great detail about my dolphin experience, but then I realized that a year from now I would really wish I had, so I put it in a separate post

Tulum, Mexico

Tulum, Mexico

The other port we went to was Cozumel, Mexico. Beth and I both did the Tulum shore excursion here. We had to take a ferry to Playa del Carmen and then a bus to the park parking lot, and then a long walk to the ruins. I don’t think I really got enough time at Tulum either, but I did get a couple of good shots I think. Then, after the long walk back to the bus, we had a late lunch at some resort or something – really good buffet I must say. And we got to walk on the beach  for a bit. Then a long bus ride back to the ferry, and it was dark when we got back to the Ryndam. It was a fun day, if a bit long. The only thing that would have been better was if I had had some money. I was planning on getting money (cash, I had cards) in Key West – well that didn’t happen! So I had no money to tip the driver and tour guides. So, note to self: get money when going on vacation!

The Ryndam at Night

The Ryndam at Night

The cruise was all in all pretty good. I didn’t get to see any stars, and that is my biggest complaint. The sky was the blackest black I have ever seen at night, but on the clearest night there was only a couple of stars. Maybe cruise ships aren’t good for seeing stars because they have so many lights on them. I don’t know. But, I was hoping to see some stars, and I didn’t. I was pretty upset about that. I did do the dolphin adventure and see some Mayan ruins though. Two out of three isn’t too bad. Maybe next cruise I’ll get to see stars. One can always hope.

Happy New Year!

Random image for New Year's post

Random image for New Year's post

One of my facebook friends posted a joke resolution to be more messy, do less housework, and give up cooking all together. It was a good laugh but it got me to thinking about resolutions. I decided to list some resolutions I DON’T have to make. Here’s a small list that I came up with.

New Years Resolutions I don’t have to make:
1. Exercise regularly
2. Stop smoking
3. Learn to play the piano
4. Get out of debt
5. End a damaging relationship
6. Take more fish oil
7. Finish Kirby’s Epic Yarn
8. See my name in print
9. Quit gambling
10. Stop drinking

I found it interesting to see the areas of my life that are going well, or that I’ve had sucess in. It is important to have some sort of affirmation once in a while. I know I don’t take time to pat myself on the back very often. I tend to be pretty hard on myself, but this exercise is a way of turning that around. I had to take time to think “what do I do well? What good habits do I have? What have I eliminated from my life that was bad? What bad habits have I never picked up?” I lead a pretty good life, and there are probably many more resolutions that I don’t have to make, but thinking of them is a difficult thing to do. I kept thinking of the things that I do want to make resolutions about. So here’s the list of things to work on in 2011.

1. Develop a meditation habit
2. Loose weight
3. Get up earlier / Be more productive in the morning
4. Launch a business selling beads
5. Blog more often

I don’t want to overwhealm myself with too many resolutions so this list is shorter than the first list. For me, it is important to take stock once in a while and identify ways that I can improve myself or my life. It doesn’t have to be at the New Year, but that is a convienient time to do it (even if it is a couple of days late). So now that I have my list of improvements that I DON’T have to make, and a smaller list of things TO DO, I wish you a Happy New Year filled with good things!
